Every gold piece is 18K gold PVD-plated over surgical-grade 316L stainless steel. PVD bonds the gold layer at a molecular level rather than dipping it, which is why the colour survives showering, sweat and daily wear instead of wearing through at the clasp within a season. Why the base metal matters most
Brass bases are what turn fingers and necks green, because the copper in brass reacts with skin. 316L steel does not react, so the piece is hypoallergenic as well as waterproof — and if the plating ever did wear, the metal underneath is still inert.
